Cycling holidays built around Slovenia, not a template

Slovenia Bike Tours is a locally run cycling specialist founded by Nejc Grilc. Every route is shaped by first-hand knowledge of the roads, climbs and quieter connections between the Julian Alps, Lake Bled, the Soča Valley, Slovenia’s wine country and the Adriatic coast.

We organise self-guided and private cycling holidays with carefully selected accommodation, luggage transfers, GPS navigation, quality bike rental and local support throughout the journey. The result is an independent adventure with the essential details already taken care of—and a real person nearby whenever plans need to change.

Why is Slovenia such a good destination for a cycling holiday?

Slovenia is an excellent choice for riders who want a lot of variety in a short amount of time. The country is small enough to explore easily, yet diverse enough to offer a new landscape every day. One stage can take you through quiet alpine valleys, the next past vineyards, forests, karst villages, or towards the Adriatic Sea.

Cycling here feels personal and relaxed. Many routes follow smaller local roads, scenic valleys, and well-maintained paths where the pace of travel allows you to notice more than just the distance covered. For active travellers, Slovenia combines nature, food, culture, and outdoor sport in a very compact and enjoyable way.

Is cycling in Slovenia safe?

Slovenia is generally considered a safe and comfortable country for cycling. Outside the main towns and larger roads, traffic is often light, especially on carefully selected cycling routes that we provide. From years of our experience, we will design the routes for you with the least amount of traffic possible. The road surface is usually good, and cycling is a familiar part of everyday outdoor life in many parts of the country.

As with any cycling holiday, normal road awareness is still important. We plan routes with safety, scenery, and ride quality in mind, avoiding busy sections whenever possible. But you are always responsible for your safety on the bike and must always adhere to road laws to ensure a smooth tour.

When is the best time of year for cycling in Slovenia?

The best months for a cycling holiday in Slovenia are usually from April to late October. During this period, the weather is most suitable for longer days outdoors, mountain roads are more accessible, and the countryside is at its most enjoyable.

May, June, September, and early October are especially good choices for riders who prefer milder temperatures and quieter routes. July and August can also be beautiful, particularly in the Alps, but these months are warmer and busier in popular tourist areas.

Can I bring my own bike?

Yes, you are welcome to travel with your own bike. Many experienced cyclists prefer using equipment they already know and feel comfortable with, especially on multi-day tours.

If bringing your own bike is not practical, we can provide premium road, gravel bikes and e-bikes for an additional fee. All options are carefully chosen for Slovenia's mixed terrain, from rolling countryside and paved climbs to gravel roads and longer touring days.

Do you offer group tours or private tours?

Our tours are mainly private and tailor-made. This means the tour can be adapted to your group, your riding level, and the type of holiday you want.

You can choose a relaxed pace with more time for food, wine, and sightseeing, or a more active version with longer stages and extra climbing. The daily schedule, route difficulty, and overall rhythm of the trip can all be adjusted before the tour.

Booking cancellation policy

If you need to cancel your booking, the refund depends on how much notice is given before the tour start date.

For cancellations made more than 30 days before the beginning of the tour, guests receive a full refund of the amount paid for the reservation.

For cancellations made from 30 to 14 days before the tour start date, guests are entitled to a refund of 50% of the booking amount. If anything happens and you need to cancel the tour in the last 14 days prior to the start, we will find a suitable solution together. We know that things happen and before anything else we want to ensure that our guests are happy and comfortable in booking a tour with us.

Slovenia Bike Tours exceeded our expectations in every way. Nejc was incredibly accommodating with our group, booking changes and queries, and always responded promptly and informatively. Nothing was ever too much trouble. Our accommodation was clearly chosen with care, and each night brought a delightful surprise. The scenery was simply spectacular. Despite being a small country, Slovenia is a true microcosm of Europe, with its Alpine landscapes, beautiful winelands, fascinating karst region and glorious coastline, all steeped in history and culture. From vibrant green forests and the crystal-clear Soča River to ancient castles, church bells, cowbells, picturesque farms, fairytale villages, delicious food and wonderfully friendly people — there was something magical around every corner. Our ebikes were great and very comfortable, with batteries that lasted all day, even when some of us needed a little more assistance up the hills than others! Thank you so much, Nejc, for creating such a memorable and beautifully organised trip. It was an absolute joy from start to finish, and one we will never forget!

Nejc Grilc of Slovenia Bike Tours was amazing. The bikes were perfect, the routes and scenery full of stunning views and kind people. We biked for seven days, doing 40 to 60 miles a day, around Bled, Kransjka Gora and Gorizia. Each place was an unforgettable experience. The Mangart was the highlight but Slovenia is so much more than some Alpine climbs. The land of Pogacar and Doncic did not disappoint.

My cycling trip through Slovenia was truly exceptional, and a huge part of that was our outstanding guide, Nejc Grilc from Slovenia Bike Tours. His attention to detail, regular communication, deep knowledge of the region, passion for cycling, and genuine enthusiasm made every day enjoyable and memorable. The bicycles he chose for us were excellent. He balanced challenging rides with beautiful scenery, local culture, and great recommendations for food and sightseeing. Nejc was always attentive to the group's needs, ensuring everyone felt safe, supported, and included. His professionalism, positive attitude, and ability to create a fun, relaxed atmosphere made this one of the best cycling vacations I've ever experienced. We had an excellent trip and highly recommend Slovenia Bike Tours. Nejc was a very attentive and reliable host. He went out of his way to accommodate our needs, or make recommendations to augment our experience. The bikes were comfortable and very good quality. The routes were both challenging and enjoyable. The food and lodging were also very very good. The rooms were clean and the beds were comfortable. There was always plenty of food and great hospitality. The price was certainly appropriate for our package. We did the self directed 7 day Alps to the Sea route on gravel bikes, although we made a few changes to the itinerary. We are already planning our next trip with Nejc and Slovenia Bike Tours.

Nejc and the team at Slovenia Bike Tours put together the best holiday one could wish for. Based on my requests Nejc curated an itinerary that allowed for plenty of cycling but also provided me with the opportunity to take days off the bike if weather or my own inclination was to take it easy and do the touristy things. A brand new Ridley bike allowed me to ride with confidence along the routes that Nejc sent me. Superb accommodation included marvellous breakfasts. Slovenia is a beautiful country with a rich and varied history and culture. And what’s more I felt safe on the road. Everybody gives way to cyclists and an extensive system of bike paths separates the cyclist from the motor vehicles.

Highly recommend Nejc and his tour Co. it was our first time to Slovenia and Nejc planned everything - he was flexible with our days and everything was top notch, the accommodations, choices of restaurants and biking routes. We were truely stunned at the beauty of Slovenia and in our short time coveted lakes, rivers, vineyards and the Coast. Nejc is very organized, is a local and a great source of information. He was also very fun and easy going so it was a 5 plus vacation.
